UniProtKB description: Catalyzes the oxidative deamination of L-amino acids with molecular oxygen to the corresponding alpha-keto acids and ammonia (PubMed:30631897, PubMed:32653636, PubMed:32852125, PubMed:33580695, PubMed:34459552, PubMed:39152524). L-glutamine shows the highest relative activity but LAAO4 has a broad substrate specificity, including L-amino acids with big aromatic, acidic and basic side chains (PubMed:33580695, PubMed:39152524). Methyl esters of these L-amino acids are also accepted, ethyl esters are converted but with lower activity, whereas D-Amino acids are not converted (PubMed:30631897). No reaction is detected for small polar amino acids such as L-cysteine or L-aspartate, and very little for small, branched hydrophobic amino acids like L-valine (PubMed:39152524).
