DNA Day 2012: April 20
04/17
NHGRI's National DNA Day commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project and the discovery of DNA's double helix. It's also a day for students, teachers, and the public to learn more about genetics and genomics.
Celebrate by:
- Creating a paper model of DNA using the RCSB PDB's PDF (available from PDB-101's Educational Resources)
- Extracting DNA in your own kitchen (strawberries recommended; you can pound them in a plastic bag instead of using the blender)
- Visiting the National Human Genome Research Institute's DNA Day website for teaching tools, a chatroom, and webcasts
- Reading the original 1953 publications relating to the discovery and learning about the scientists involved at NPG's Double Helix: 50 years of DNA
- Watching the NSF's Chalk Talk: DNA
- Exploring Molecule of the Month features on DNA, Designed DNA Crystal, Transfer RNA, and more at PDB-101
- Spotting the nucleic acids in the video for Bjork's Hollow
